Governments Endorse a New Work Programme to Protect Central Asia's Shared Land Migratory Species
Government representatives from the wider Central Asian region endorsed a six-year work programme for the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI). The highly anticipated and comprehensive Work Programme maps and defines activities for thirteen priority transboundary conservation regions that are important for conserving seventeen iconic species of mammals of the region for the first time.

Importance of the Chernye Zemli State Reserve for the Conservation of the Northwest Pre-Caspian Saiga Population: History and Perspectives
The Chernye Zemli State Reserve was established on 11 June 1990 for the restoration of the ecological balance in the deserted areas of the Chernye Zemli ecological region of the Caspian lowlands. At present, the Reserve plays a key role in the conservation of the Northwest Pre-Caspian saiga population (Saiga tatarica tatarica), which is the only population inhabiting exclusively within the Russian borders.

Данные учета позволяют скорректировать стратегию охраны животных, перераспределить усилия службы государственной охраны в регионы, с наибольшим скоплением животных, и в то же время, уделить особое внимание местам с наименьшим скоплением животных, с целью скорейшего восстановления их численности.
First Community-based Area for Saiga Conservation in Kazakhstan
The Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica and S. borealis mongolica) is a migratory herbivore found in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan. The saiga generally inhabits open dry steppe grasslands and semideserts. Saigas in the 1990s underwent a catastrophic fall (~95%) in numbers due to poaching, decreasing from more than 1.5 million to 50,000 individuals across its range. Most of Saiga tatarica is found in Kazakhstan (over 97%) with smaller numbers occurring in the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan, whereas Saiga borealis mongolica only occurs in Mongolia.
